Poverty of concept: A great challenge for quality Education
We are now in the twenty-first century which can be termed as an era of information technology, age of business, etc: Thus, the educationalists, socialists, guardian, teachers, students and all related agencies are making their voice for quality education. Hence, quality education is the only mean that can prepare the students to cope with the changes and new trends of the twenty-first century.
As all politicians, student leaders, NGO's and INGOs are delivering nice lectures, conducting different seminars, conferences and workshops in 5 star hotel the situation of our educational system seemed to be static. It is tasteless as neither not nor cold.
Although all people are talking about the quality education what does the quality mean seem to be out of their reach. Politicians and concerned authorities talk more about quality education but no efforts had yet been made to change the national education policies which are traditional. Let's say, our current educational policies are the continuation of traditional curriculum followed by British Educational system which in proved to be completely failure at the present day world.
The society in being modernized day by days as society in being modernized its in being complicated to survive. As we say learning is preparation for life, the education we are providing to our students must meet the necessities of present day word. That is to say, the education should make the learners able to cope with the complicated situations of present day word and should enable them to adjust in the new environment created by the era of information technology.
As the word in turning in to global village by the use of information technology, i.e. email and internet, we are still emphasizing on the tradition concept of rote learning. We are still depending on paper-pencil test as the best means of assessing student's ability. Although it is needless to say a learner's overall competence can not be assessed by a 3 hours test; we can not even make such examination system effective. Over emphasis on SLC examination shows our success having less then 50% of overall success. If we see the case of higher education, Tribhuvan University released a data stating that nearly 8% of the student's pass percentage in masters in Humanities. Thus, we have to examine it deeply either our learners are being failure or there are some draw backs on our educational policy. Thus, this article tries to be centered on one of the major challenges why we can not provide quality education although we are promising it day-by day that is poverty of concept.
Saying 'poverty of concept', here, I want to refer to the misconception of the related agencies about the term 'quality education'. Some of the examples of 'poverty of concept' can be seen on follows:
(I) poverty of concept in political leaders:
Our politicians and student leaders make different lectures and public-speeches on quality education but it had been an agenda only to deceive the students and people for them. In their concept to increase the pass percentage alone is quality education.
(II) poverty of concept in NGOS and INGOS:
NGOS and INGOS believe that the quality education can be ensured by having meetings and seminars at 5 star hotels. Thus, they are wasting a large sum of money on those seminars only. The sum that should be gone to the grass root level for real improvement is thus being wasted; moreover, some NGOS and INGOS are distributing computers and laptops to improve the situation. Although, it can be taken positively but the due importance should be given to improve our policy and system rather than distributing laptops alone can provide the quality education as the laptops provided at of costs are mostly seem to misused.
(III) poverty in concept of education institutions:
The educational institutions are advertising the slogan of quality of education stating that they had tall and sophisticated buildings a flock of school/college buses, nice canteen, a spacious sports ground, etc. As these things are the part of mean for quality education, let's think are they enough to fulfill the concept of quality education? The misconception of educational institutions is that developing infra-structure and collecting a huge amount of tuition fee in quality education.
(IV) poverty in concept of guardians and students:
The guardians and students believe that the quality education in to get distinction marks. Thus, the quality education for them is related with the marks they obtained in the mark-sheet. That is to say, they are unaware that either they are able to compete in this competitive world or they can adjust in this era or not. Thus, they are unaware that the education's role is to make the learners prepared for their future endeavor.
To develop quality education, thus require a positive concept in all aforementioned agencies that is to say, we can provide quality education only if we can remove the misconception or poverty of concept from related agencies. The quality education can be achieved only by focusing on technical education, use of new approaches and teaching methodologies, use of email and internet for teaching purposes, use of new and innovating evaluation system, new curriculum which emphasizes on practical education and which teaches to respect the labor. To achieve all these things awareness in most necessary.
As all of us are crying for quality education, let's work collectively to achieve the slogan of quality of education rather than making it a mere slogan for public speeches. It is the time to do something instead of falsifying others let's start it from today, shall we ???
